Historical Study on the Traditional Flower Arrangement of Korea



Abstract
This study was conducted to understand traditional flower arrangement of Korea. Historical materials were analyzed to understand the plant materials containers, patterns and composition types used for traditional flower arrangement. Patterns of Korean traditional flower arrangement were also compared to Japanese and European flower arrangements. The results are summarized as follows:
1. The historical materials analyzed in this study were mainly from ancient pictures (80%), and most of them were from Lee Dynasty (78%).
2. The Korean traditional flower arrangement were emphasized the harmony between flowers and floral containers. Plant materials used in the traditional flower arrangement were div ided into two groups of terrestrial plant flowers arid hydrophyte flowers. The order of frequency of using flowers were same as follows:
Nelumbo (22%), Paeonia (14%), Chrysanthemum (12%), Camellia (7%), Prunus (6%) and Magnolia (3%). Floral containers used for the traditional Bower arrangement were Beong (49%), Ban (17%), Ho (8%) and Bal (1%).
3. Composition style of the traditional flower arrangement were round, oval, half oval, triangular, tetragonal, vertical, S-curve and non-formal style. However, main styles of composition were triangular (37%) and oval (20%). Patterns of the traditional flower arrangement were three Buddhist image form (12%), crescent three Buddhist image form (9%), vertical form (6%), one flower per stem (5%), two flower per stem (16%), complex composition (17%) and non-formal style (21%).
4. Comparisons of the traditional flower arrangement style among Korea, Japan and Europe can be summarized as follows:
The Korean traditional flower arrangement was emphasized line and space as composition of three flower stem through harmony to nature, while the Japanese type was emphasized line and angles of branch as composition of three flower stem through artificial skill. But the Europe style was emphasized color and mass as geometrical composition of artistic principle.
